a moment of silence
An ArtEC Members Exhibition
an exhibition of artworks that reflect on and honour the legacies of late Eastern Cape artists who have significantly shaped the local art scene, as a tribute to their influence and contributions.
Including a selection of artworks from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum's collection
at the Bird Street Art Gallery, Nelson Mandela University
20 Bird Street, Central, Gqeberha
The ArtEC community were invited to engage in a collective homage to the influential local artists whose presence has left an indelible mark on the Eastern Cape art landscape. Across many decades, we have mourned the loss of significant figures who shaped our art community, contributed to ArtEC/EPSAC, and enriched the South African art scene. This exhibition creates a space to reflect on these contributions, encouraging members to honour those who have passed while simultaneously advancing the creative legacy they have left behind.
Through this theme, artists were invited to explore the silent moments of their own creative practice, the reflective stillness that often accompanies art-making, and to draw inspiration from the lives, work and spirit of the artists who came before them.
In a broader sense, this exhibition sought to express gratitude for their artistic contributions while celebrating the ways these influences resonate in contemporary creative practices.
